FESTIVE DIVINE SERVICE WAS HELD IN THE CHURCH OF THE SMOLENSK ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD
On 10 August, in the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, the Orthodox Church held a divine service on the occasion of celebrations in honour of the Day of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God situated on the territory of EXPOROFORUM Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God is one of the most sacred things of the Russian Church. According to the ecclesiastical legend, the icon called “Hodegetria (“She Who Shows the Way”) was painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist during the mortal life of the Most Holy Mother of God.
We recall that fragments of the foundation of the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God were found during planning construction of EXPOFORUM. Lost in the years of the war, a rare type of church for Russia, one with two bell towers, built in the 18th century by Giacomo Quarenghi, was restored based on preserved drawings and pictures of the architect.
Divine service in the church is held every day: on August 13 and 14, the celebration of the Venerable Wood of the Life-Creating Cross of the Lord will be held here.
13 August, 17:00 – all-night vigil (confession);
14 August, 9:30 – confession; 10:00 – Divine Liturgy.
