From 5–7 December, the IX International Forum “Arctic: Today and the Future” was held at the Expoforum congress and exhibition centre. This year, the key public event dedicated to the development of Arctic zone of the Russian Federation brought together 2,500 delegates from 40 of Russia’s federal subjects, including all of the Arctic regions.

The elevated official status of the participants (the forum was attended by governors and representatives of relevant regional authorities, representatives of 8 federal ministries, 15 departments and 25 senators and deputies of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation) enabled discussion of the most important problems in this field: the prospective development of the region, the upholding of the geo-economic interests of Russia in the Arctic, and the preservation of its unique environment. The main theme of the IX Forum was the new legislative basis for state policy in the Arctic. This year, representatives of public organizations showed increased interest, with 22 delegations from the European Union, BRICS and the Asia-Pacific region sending their delegations to the forum.

More than 300 experts and speakers took part in the 40 events of the Forum’s business programme of panel and working sessions, round tables and conferences.

“Today, a new strategy, new mechanisms and incentives for development are being laid out for the Arctic. This will be discussed at our forum, which has traditionally been the link between all parties interested in the development of the Arctic territories,” stated Arthur Chilingarov, President of The Association of Polar Explorers Interregional Public Organization and special representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Arctic and Antarctica.

Over the next 15 years, there are plans to create up to 200,000 new jobs in the Arctic zone. A federal centre for healthcare development in the Arctic will be opened in Arkhangelsk, and an influx of investment in the polar region is expected to amount to 15 trillion roubles. This will all be possible thanks to the benefits provided by the strategy for development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation for 2035. Alexander Krutikov, Deputy Minister of the Far East and the Arctic, made these and other statements as part of his speech. “A special economic programme can be established in the Arctic zone in 2020,” the speaker emphasised.

Gevork Vermishyan, CEO of forum partner MegaFon PJSC, spoke about the creation of the first trans-arctic telecommunications designed to strengthen Russia’s position in the Arctic by providing the fastest signal with minimal delay. Vladimir Burmatov, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection, shared the news that 1 billion 700 million rubles will be allocated for the organisation of the North Pole 2020 scientific expedition. The aim of this project represents the realisation of more than 40 scientific projects. The large-scale project involves the participation of more than 250 Russian scientists from 28 institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, eight universities, two Rosatom institutes, three Roshydromet institutes, three institutes of the Ministry of Health and five manufacturers of scientific equipment.

An exhibition was organised to support the Forum’s business programme. Leading companies active in the polar region and the Arctic regions of the Russian Federation demonstrated their developments and technologies. The exposition presented samples of the latest icebreaker ships, aircraft, SUVs and all-terrain vehicles, as well as equipment designed to work in difficult climate conditions.

At the end of the forum, the annual results of the public Arctic agenda were summed up. At the beginning of 2020, the final public resolution for 2019 on the practical issues of socio-economic development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and related infrastructure is scheduled for release.

On 5 November, in the Expoforum convention and exhibition centre, work began at “Megustro”; the main event of the restaurant market for chefs and restaurant owners.

The central ideas of the restaurant festival are the exchange of international management experience, expertise from distinguished chefs, examining trends in the coming year and analysing and testing the main approaches to gastronomy.

The company “METRO”; one of the largest international operators of retail and wholesale trading and ‘ExpoForum International’ are once again the organisers of the festival.

The first to speak at the opening ceremony was Rafael Case, Global Director of METRO; “We are glad to be in St. Petersburg, which represents one of the most advanced cities in this industry”. He also answered the question: what is the Megustro festival? “First and foremost it is a forum with the participation of eleven chefs with Michelin stars. It is one of the largest events in both St. Petersburg and the entire country. It is also a platform where we can exchange ideas to define the future of our business. It is a place where we can exchange information and help one another and facilitate the development of this industry“.

Sergei Volkov, Vice Director General of Expoforum International, celebrated the three-year anniversary of the festival and hoped for “inspiration, development and creativity at the event, so that participants can find new ideas for their business and new recipes for their kitchen, as well as new partners“.

Yuri Kalabin, Chairman of the Committee for Industrial Policy, Innovations and Trade of St. Petersburg, commented on market statistics on the food industry in St. Petersburg: “8,300 companies, 570,000 seating places and a 90 billion-ruble turnover in this sector – this is very little for our great city. The issue of low demand is linked with the quality of what we are offering. If we increase the quality of the product, we can replace the spiral of poverty with a spiral of prosperity”.

Elena Podgornaya, Head of the Department of Consumer Market Development of the Committee for Industrial Policy, Innovations and Trade of St. Petersburg, wished everyone success at the event, professional growth, interesting networking and as many clients as possible.

Sergei Lobanov, Vice Director of the Department of Domestic Trade Development, Numerical Tagging Systems for Goods and Legalising Product Turnover of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, noted: “St. Petersburg completely deserves its status as not only the cultural capital, but also the gastronomic capital. Where else but here could a professional event such as Megustro be held?

The festival included: 10 workshops by chefs with Michelin stars, 90 educational workshops and seminars led by expert speakers and scouting by the 25 strongest teams from the North-western region in the “Chef a la Russe” championship.

Megustro 2019 was held from 5 to 7 November in the Expoforum convention and exhibition centre.

At the exhibition, 57 development companies, manufacturers and suppliers of medical technologies, equipment, devices and medicines presented their latest achievements. At the stand for the Health Committee of St. Petersburg, with participation from the Medical Information and Analytical Center State Institute and the Cluster of Medical, Environmental Instrumentation and Biotechnology NPO, the progress of the national Health Care project was presented – these are city programmes for improving medical services and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

The specialised Territory of Health programme was presented as a fascinating interactive zone where anyone could make a meaningful contribution. It included several sections on healthcare topics. According to Alexandra Konradi, Deputy Director General for Research of the Federal State Budgetary Institution, the Almazov National Medical Research Center, when developing the concept of healthy cities and public health, teamwork is very important. “In our opinion, for a locality to function as a truly healthy city, the concept of “partnership” must be maintained from control bodies to public organisations who are trying to solve something they have in common,” said Konradi.

Healthy Cities is a global World Health Organization project which was launched in 1998, interacting with all areas of life in a modern city. This international movement serves as an incentive for the development of cities seeking to improve the health of their residents. Tatyana Shestakova, Executive Director of the Russian Association of Healthy Cities, Regions and Villages, and coordinator of the Russian national network of the WHO Healthy Cities project, spoke about the project itself which is being implemented within the Russian Federation. “The main goal of our Association is to combine efforts and resources to create conditions for improving the health and quality of life of the population in Russian cities, regions and villages. We are striving to adhere to the following strategic directives: the growth of a healthy population through the creation and development of a single regional preventative space, the formation of healthy lifestyles and the creation of a healthy urban environment,” explained Shestakova.

On the 24th of October, the Medical Tourism Conference took place at Expoforum, dedicated to the development of the medical tourism segment in the Northern Capital and the competitiveness of medical services.
