The national breed clubs have demonstrated their best representatives in Petersburg. The champion dogs walked around the ring of the mono-breed shows at ExpoForum.

The four-legged elite was showing the guests its beauty, grace and good temper on the fourth ring. Stefan Mitrevski, a referee and expert from Macedonia, was giving grades to playful Bull-terriers, silent Basenji, intellectuals – American Staffordshire Terriers, independent Siberian Husky and to other representatives of the national breed clubs. «Neva Favorite» and «Neva Star» clubs acted as the organizers of the mono-breed shows.

For example, Basenji, the dogs with a typical tightly twisted tail, is one of the most ancient breeds that came to us from Africa. More details about this breed were provided by Irina Osipova, the owner of Basenji breeding house African dogs, who was waiting for her turn to get in the ring with her five-month pet.

«The first thing that we know about Basenji is that it is a non-barking breed, but actually they have quite a wide range of sounds: they grumble, roar, sing, mew. As Irina Osipova described the features of Basenji, the dog practically neither sheds hair nor smells.

«At the mono-breed show we are demonstrating the beauty of the breed. Here we have a chance to compare the dog in its class with its relatives: male dogs with male dogs, bitches with bitches, puppies with puppies. The breed monitoring also takes place here. For instance, Basenji should be high-pawed and as slim as gazelles, and their twisted tails become rigid as they grow older», the breeding house owner commented, having note the high level of the show organization.

We have learned about the advantages of the American Staffordshire Terrier from Olesia, a handler (that is a person involved in preparing and exhibiting dogs at shows and competitions).

«There is no exact standard for the Staffordshire Terrier, many things in their exterior are allowed now. A dog must make an impression of strong and brave. It has a strong body and a large «smiling» head. This dog is very easygoing by nature and, contrary to stereotypes, does not show any aggression towards a human being. A classical sofa dog», the handler is sure.

On these days, you can see the city’s best dogs with your own eyes at the exhibition «City of Dogs + World of Cats» that is held at ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Smart gadgets for pets and yummy treats that any owner would envy are showcased at the specialized exhibition «City of Dogs + World of Cats» that is held on May 4–5, 2024 at ExpoForum.

There were as many visitors around the stands as at the rings. Cat and dog owners who completed performances with their fosterlings are interested what can be given to the champions as treats. There is such a selection here that one immediately wants to become a cat or a dog himself.

An animal often lacks physical activity in a city. To maintain its activity, the exhibition features a lot of interactive toys, laser pointers, teasing fish rods, feathers, and fluffy tails with embedded bells. Such toys develop predatory drives, and help an animal to keep fit. They give a chance even to a little kitten to feel an experienced hunter. Soft and solid devices, those for catching and biting, with an embedded timer and sleep mode, presented by LSK, save time for the owner and give freedom and activity to the pet.

The experts of the exhibition recommend to buy pet goods from the approved suppliers only: there are too many goods of poor quality at the market. GU-VAS, a Belorussian manufacturer, has displayed at its stand the scratching houses made of high-quality cardboards, dog toys (non-abrasive and non-toxic material does not cause injuries to teeth and gums, and a squeaker stimulates the animal’s interest and inspires it to play). Convenient pet beds and hammocks, snuffing assorted cubes, premium car seat bags: these goods have been developed for the most beloved «children» – our pets.

The founders of the independent family company «Artigiano» from Saint Petersburg are sure: animal longevity starts with good food. Natural treats made of the well-tested raw stuff are the best award in the training process, long journey, and every day.

Th same ideology is followed by Magna company, a well-known food importer. Turkey and veal pate with vegetables, lamb and soft beef souffle, and what is more, quail and pheasant. Near the stand with such delicacies one is about to cry: «Fedya, poultry!»

Ekaterina Bukharova, Head of the Breeder-Marketing of Moscow Branch of Grand-Alfa, told that due to the foreign pet food manufacturers having withdrawn from the market, in two recent years an issue of own production has become a topical one. Change of food is a stress for the animal. That’s why, when choosing a cat or a dog nutrition, the owner wants to be sure that he will always be able to buy this food.

«Our two new brands – Best Dinner and premium Edel – have been manufactured for almost three years at the Limcor plant in Belgorod region. At the end of the summer, we will release a dry veterinary diet Best Dinner for cats and dogs, which is a long-awaited product to correct basic animal diseases. Our committed position in the Edel brand is maximum meat in each product. We want to prove that in Russia we can do everything well, and not just once but for many years», underlined Ekaterina Bukharova.

Ekaterina has also said, that the company employees test the new foods themselves. Of course, this is made by their pets, but their «parents» also wouldn’t mind tasting the tenderest souffle or pate: «Tinned meat often looks far less attractive for people than the dog tinned food containing no skin and fat; the tin is tightly stuffed with minced meat».

Aleksandra Bazarnaya, Valta company’s Manager for Working with Breeding Farms, agrees that the animal nutrition should be characterized by stability: «Our premium Award was manufactured in 2023. We then developed our own food to be manufactured in our country, and the breeders and owners will be sure that it is a good diet of high quality and that it will always be here». The Valt stand features three own brands: Mr. Kranch toys, premium food Award and «Mnyms» treats.

So, when the pets had dinner, it’s time to think of their teeth hygiene. Elena Vasilieva, Marketing Expert of Saint Petersburg network «Municipal Veterinary Diagnostic and Treatment Center No.1» draws attention of the exhibition visitors to the fact that it is very important to provide quality dental care of pets, clean their teeth regularly, give the well-balanced food, and only the treats that were permitted by a dentist, and to place braces in time, if it is needed to form normal occlusion. Elena Vasilieva recommends to make dental check-up once a year and to make the teeth cleaning – everything as with people.

Beauty and excellent upbringing are the ideal qualities of a human friend. The best representatives of pure-bred dogs were shown in Petersburg.

Representatives of a hundred of breeds were competing for the titles of candidates to the national champions (CAС) and the champions of the Russian Canine Federation (CRCA). The winners’ qualities were duly appreciated by the experts of the dog show «Star Marathon» and of the eight groups show of the International Canine Association (FCI) of the «Neva Favorite» club.

Beauty and obedience were demonstrated by Golden Retrievers, American Akita, Chihuahua, Pomeranian Spitzes, English and American Cocker Spaniels, Basenji, Australian Shepherds and other representatives of the dog variety.
We have caught Lyudmila Komyakova, the owner of the Pomeranian and Small Spitz breeding house «Dan-Star-Com», at combing the fluffy champion of Russia and Europe, who was getting ready for walking around the ring.

«First of all, the dog shows its exterior, but it should also move gracefully, have stable mental health and should not show any aggression to human beings and dogs», Lyudmila Komyakova says. In her opinion, in Petersburg, the dogs of all breeds demonstrate the highest breed standards. «Everything is organized perfectly here, there is much space, the rings are large», the champion trainer noted the venue advantages.

RCI expert referee for the exterior of all breeds (or all-rounder) Valentin Fyodorov from the Republic of Belarus, who has been estimating the pure-bred four-footers for over 30 years already, has talked about the nuances of his job at the show.

«We estimate the dog for conformity with the breed standard. It should be noted that an opinion of an ordinary person often coincides with the expert’s one: if it is a beautiful dog it is highly likely to be conforming. The rest is just details that we estimate in each dog», Valentin Fyodorov says. He underlined that the exhibition is not only the «dogs smile to you» show, but also a serious zoo technical event, where a dog gets a breed estimate and conformance to the standard. It is for the second year already that the expert is working at «Star Marathon». «Now we have just an excellent prize fund, individual for each breed. ExpoForum is a great platform with a light spacious premises and wide possibilities», the referee commented.

Today’s dances with dogs have resulted in a burst of the spectators’ applause and overwhelming emotions. The loving owners and their four-legged vis-a-vis presented the performance items in various genres and styles on the main ring of the exhibition «City of Dogs + World of Cats» at ExpoForum.

According to Lyudmila Eybogina, the coach and sportsman of the club of Cynology and Sport Development Association (CSDA), 50 couples, that is the companion dogs with their owners, will perform on the arena on May 4. These are mainly participants from Saint Petersburg, however, there are also performers from other regions. Dogs of different level, from beginners to the experienced one, dance on the ring. In total, the performances have three levels of complexity: debut, progress and master.

«Dancing with dogs is a positive type of training. The digs in the ring show their skills to music. Today, the competitions are held in the training mode. Participants may demonstrate to the spectators how the dances are practiced, how the elements and tricks are studied which then appear to be funny and playful», comments Lyudmila Eybogina.

For instance, one of the duets, the owner Olga Sergeeva with her nine-year beauty – Labrador retriever called Real Person Fearentino (just Lora at home), showed the dance «Renewal» to the song of Madonna. The four-legged dancer is a veteran already, performs in the progress-freestyle class. «Today we have already had a final rehearsal to raise the spirits and get more motivated in the ring. Our dance is a symbol of our meeting: when I met my wonderful dog, all my miseries went away, and together we will overcome everything», said the participant.

Another bright couple, Zoya Kovaleva with the beginning starlet of the ring, continental toy-spaniel (papillon dog) Emmy, have recently completed the initial stage and are preparing for a more serious one.

«We have prepared for about a year. First, we studied basic elements, and then, with the assistance of the trainer who invented the dance pattern, we started working on the links. We accumulate the experience in the ring», said Zoya Kovaleva. According to her, Emmy is a quick inventing dog who is hard to hold. «We like to dance very much! Especially with a treat», the owner laughs.

On May 5, the «Sirius» Dog Training Center will hold the top-rated dog show called «Tsarskoye Selo is Our Homeland» within the festival «City of Dogs + World of Cats. Spring-2024». The event will be held under the sponsorship of the Russian Canine Federation (RCF).

940 dogs of 134 breeds will participate in the show. The best representatives will be chosen in different age categories – from puppies and juniors to the veterans. The event has a status of a top-rated one, this is the highest rank of canine exhibitions in Russia. Taking part in such competition, the dogs get scores from the RCF according to the SAS system.

Dogs of each breed will be estimated by referees according to multiple criteria. Who is most close to the ideal standard will get the highest grade? Not only the exterior but also the behavior of pets will be evaluated. «The dog’s temper is also of great importance. It should be lively, eagerly to react to the commands, because the dogs are working animals», reminds Olga Sergeeva, Head of the «Sirius» Dog Training Club.

The referee board of the show comprised the leading breed experts from different countries: Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Belorussia, Serbia and Russia. The final stage of the competition will take place on the main ring, where the winner will be chosen. The prize winner will be added to the Best Russian Dog list and will be able to pretend to the title «The Best Dog of the Year».

For the first time nine systems of exhibition evaluation of cats will be presented at the festival «City of Dogs + World of Cats. Spring-2024».

The cat owners not only love their pets but are also very proud of them. Titles, diplomas and awards only confirm this pride. This year, the festival will focus on the systems of exhibition evaluation of cats: now there are nine of them. As a rule, each association and even club has a system of evaluation for conformity with the breed standards, however, they primarily use two systems, the American competitive and the European, as a reference. Now the Russian clubs are developing their own evaluation systems.

Earlier, the scoring systems were provided by seven clubs: FIFE, WCF, WACC, FARUS, IFA, RFS, WFA. This time, they also included FELIS RUSSICA, АSC and ICU instead of FIFE.

«The number of cat evaluation systems is growing indeed. This is due to the fact that the number of pets is growing and due to the interest to different refereeing forms and rules», said Elena Stern, President of the breeding felinological center «Exclusive».

Besides, the clubs are moving away from the European and American evaluation standards by creating the analogous one, as it is rather hard to be presented in Europe and the USA. Russia is now establishing its own estimates and refereeing styles, which will be attractive for the breeders, easy to hold and fascinating.

«Russian systems work not only in Russia. They are introduced in China, Thailand, and are more oriented towards the East. The Russian clubs present their systems at the exhibitions in Asian regions», says Irina Kornilova, President of the club «LapLandia».

However, as in many other cases, one should know where to draw a line in the issue of evaluation. «I hope, the number of evaluation systems will not be increased any more. The breeders have no financial and time opportunities to test multiple systems with their pets, moving from one stand to another», says Sofya Krasnoselskaya, the international referee for all cat breeds.

At the festival «City of Dogs + World of Cats. Spring – 2024», the visitors may not only see the best representatives of breeds and watch the competitions, but also get inspired for taking part in the show with their own pets.

Regime and moderation are the key to the pet health. This subject was much spoken about by the participants and guests of the exhibition «City of Dogs and World of Cats» that is taking place at ExpoForum on these days.

Very often, the pet owners feed their fosterlings according to the principle «The best is for children» and give them too much meat and unhealthy products. That is why the allergic reactions of cats and dogs occur more often now. Along with that, many owners can not even imagine that the wrong or unsuitable nutrition is far from being the first reason of animal allergies. And not even the second one.

Ekaterina Bukharova, Head of the Breeder-Marketing of the Moscow Branch of «Grand-Alfa» (the Russian manufacturer of Best Dinner and Edel food), said that when developing the feeding regimes, especially of the correctional and dietary ones, the company specialists have paid special attention to research of the issue of allergy progress with cats and dogs. For instance, during a conversation with a well-known veterinary dermatologist from Petersburg Vladimir Ruppel, Ekaterina found out that most commonly the pet owners see the allergy reason in the bad choice of food and nutrition faults. But in reality, number one reason for allergy is flea dermatitis, an ordinary flea bite. The second reason is environmental impact (plant pollen, household chemicals, pathogenic microbial flora). Food allergy only takes the third place (about 17% of references to doctors).

Another misbelief is that chicken is the main allergic agent.

«The most often food allergic agents are beef, corn, gluten, milk products and only then the chicken protein comes, specified Ekaterina Bukharova. That’s why in our foodstuff we have fully excluded corn and wheat, and have left rice and husked oat flakes».

A cat of the rare breed Scyth-toy-bob called Grace will take part in the spring festival «City of Dogs + World of Cats» at ExpoForum.

Scyth-toy-bob is one of the youngest cat breeds, rather rare and expensive. The cost of a purebred kitten starts from 100 thousand rubles. At the adult age the animal weighs up to 2 kg. The distinctive features of the breed are a short tail, diminutiveness, Siamese color and the bright blue eyes.

It is not for the first time that Grace cat takes part in shows and regularly takes top places. It has calm temper and, like a dog, is ready to follow the owner’s footsteps. In general, the character of these cats is like a dog’s one, they are deeply attracted to their owners.

«Grace is an ideal companion. She has never hissed or scratched or bitten anyone, the show judges turn it around as they like. We have not felt any resistance», says Irina Syrchina, the owner and holder of Small Cats breeding farm.

The work on the breed started in the 1980th, and in 1993 it was registered as an experimental one. To date, the Scyth-toy-bob breed is officially recognized by many felinological federations with some differences in the standard.

When getting acquainted with the representatives of cat world it is important not only to know the history but also to have practical skills, that is to be capable of perceiving the animal’s mood.

We have prepared a short list of rules to be followed when starting communication with a pet.

Ask the cat owner permission to communicate with his/her pet. If the pet is sleeping, you should not disturb it, we also do not recommend to intrude into its personal space inside an enclosure or a cage.

If a pet is awake, contactable and the owner does not object, pay attention to the tail, ears and eyes – these are parts of the body that will talk about the cat’s mood.

A cat with its tail up indicates its good spirits, and, if a tail is put down or pressed to the body, this may be indicative of anxiety or even fear.

if the cat’s ears are pricked forward, it means that it watches the situation closely. And if the ears are laid back, it may experience stress or displeasure.

Enlarged pupils may speak for agitation or fear, while the completely constricted pupils may indicate fury. Examine also the eyes shape and glare, they may tell both on concern and on joy.

Knowing the cat’s mood signals will help you understand better the animal’s feelings and emotions, which will provide comfortable communication for you.
